Gucci Mane is getting real about his mental health, sharing details about his diagnoses of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia and the crucial role his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, plays in managing his episodes.
In a candid interview on The Breakfast Club, the 45-year-old rapper and his 40-year-old wife discussed how they navigate his mental health behind the scenes. This follows the release of Gucci’s new memoir, Episodes: The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man, where he first disclosed his diagnoses to the public.
During the interview, Gucci explained that a significant turning point came when he took accountability for his struggles and accepted the help he needed.
How Keyshia Ka’oir Manages Gucci Mane’s Episodes
Keyshia Ka’oir detailed the system she uses to support Gucci when he’s having an episode, emphasizing the importance of privacy.
“I have a system,” she explained. “First thing I do, I delete Instagram. I delete everything. Even if I gotta change his password, I’m changing it because I don’t need the public to know he’s having an episode.”
She also revealed how she spots the warning signs before an episode escalates. “I catch it. That’s why he hasn’t had another one. How you catch it is he doesn’t speak to you, he wants to be left alone, he don’t eat, he does not sleep. Text messages, there’s a period after each word.”
Gucci added that during these moments, he feels like he’s in a “psychosis” or a “warped world,” hearing voices and believing people are against him.
Ka’oir described these moments as “scary” and “really, really bad,” explaining she has to go into “mother mode” to ensure he gets the care he needs. “It’s really sad because you’re seeing someone you don’t know,” she said. She noted that while Gucci would say things that were “so mean and disrespectful,” she had to remind herself, “I’m not talking to Gucci.”
