Taxpayer Fraud in Minnesota
The Trump administration is currently going after many political leaders of the Midwestern state for taxpayer fraud. The oversight committee, largely controlled by Republican lawmakers, published a 205-page report on widespread taxpayer fraud in Minnesota’s economic and social programs. The report alleges that Walz and Keith Ellison, the Democratic governor and attorney general, respectively, knew about the schemes. The report claims that when state employees raised concerns about the fraud, the state leaders silenced them. The schemes diverted “critical resources from vulnerable Americans”.

In a post on X, the VP stated that “Minnesota state officials are not above the law” and that they must be brought to justice if they abetted fraud. Ellison, a staunch critic of the Trump administration, has filed several lawsuits against his policies.
In a statement, he has denounced the allegations, saying they are ‘unfounded” and a “political stunt” from an administration that uses government machinery to target its opponents. The state AG states that the report presents no evidence that he facilitated fraud. Walz’s response referred to his congressional testimony earlier this year in which he termed the administration’s attacks on Minnesota as “political retribution.”
Teddy Tschann is a spokesperson for the Minnesota governor. He says that the oversight committee has “proven every now and then to be nothing more than a joke.” He says that the administration targets to bring back Covid-era fraud cases to distract people from urgent issues like wars, the economy, and ICE.
He has asked the committee to also investigate POTUS for insider trading and the pardoning of convicted fraudsters. Trump and his people first started fixating on Minnesota last year when conservative influencers made posts about old fraud cases and new schemes in the state. The influencers particularly highlighted allegations made against Somalis, which triggered the government to send thousands of ICE agents into the state.
Walz, Ellison, and others are also being investigated for “hindering immigration enforcement.” Meanwhile, the federal government has tried to freeze funding for childcare and food assistance programs in response to the fraud allegation.
One of the largest fraud schemes in the state goes back to the COVID-19 era. It was a $250m scheme by a non-profit called Feeding our Future, which purported to feed children but instead used the money collected to “fund lavish lifestyles.”
Aimee Bock was the brains behind the scheme. She is now serving a 42-year prison sentence. Many others prosecuted in the case were largely Somalis. Other schemes included fake Medicaid billings by childcare providers. Most of the culprits have been brought to book. This widespread fraud led Governor Walz to end his bid for a third term.
In a Nutshell
The House report claims that the state officials knew of these crimes as early as 2019 but failed to act. It states that the inaction helped millions of dollars of federal funds to flow into the wrong hands. Democrats on the oversight committee have published their own report, saying that House Republicans are “relitigating a fraud scheme” that is already aggressively being prosecuted.
