American hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg faces a wrongful death lawsuit related to the killing of rapper Drakeo the Ruler. The lawsuit alleged liability for circumstances surrounding the music festival where Drakeo was fatally stabbed. The claim argued that Snoop Dogg’s corporation was not responsible for managing the festival. Currently, Snoop Dogg is asking the court to take his company out of the lawsuit, as reported by TMZ.
The Killing Of Drakeo The Ruler
The new legal action against Snoop Dogg is the start of the end of the long-term litigation proceedings concerning the death of Drakeo at the Once Upon a Time Music Festival in Los Angeles in 2021. The victim was identified as Drakeo the Ruler, whose real name was Darrell Caldwell. He was struck to death backstage just before going on stage and died from his injuries at 28. This case has gained a significant amount of public attention due to the security problems at the festival.
Drakeo the Ruler died December 18, 2021, while making an appearance at Once Upon a Time in Los Angeles. A tribute to West Coast hip-hop culture held at the Banc of California Stadium in Exposition Park. The likes of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, 50 Cent, YG, and others were supposed to perform at the event. Drakeo himself was also scheduled to perform at that same festival.
Investigation Leads
Investigators and witnesses claim that Drakeo was assaulted by a gang of people not far from the backstage area. Consequently, he got stabbed and transported to the hospital, where Drakeo later passed away. The concert organizers were forced to cancel the festival soon after its occurrence. Drakeo’s tragic death caused pain to his fans and fellow performers. They also recognized Drakeo the Ruler as one of the most impactful voices of rap music on the West Coast.
Drakeo the Ruler’s family sued several people involved in the incident for wrongful death. They were concert managers, private security companies, and bodies involved in the organization of the concert. The legal representatives of Drakeo’s family said the organizers allowed unauthorized people into the backstage area, which was strictly for the organizers alone, but there were no crowd control measures at the venue. The defendants were told to pay damages of more than $25 million, but their lawyers argued they had not been negligent in their duties of management.
Snoop Dogg’s Statement
Snoop Dogg’s LLC said in new documents filed at court that it would not be made liable for any damage arising out of this matter because it had nothing whatsoever to do with the management and operation of the music festival in question, although its name had been used for the event. The filing states that Snoop Dogg was not involved in organizing the event but only licensed his IP and brand name. Additionally, the filing notes there’s no evidence that Snoop Dogg was personally involved in any decisions about security and backstage operations for the festival. Any thoughts?
