Lamar Morris enters a space that he’s been ready for his whole life. With the release of his first EP, “WAIT ME!”, comes music that reflects himself, influences, and a conviction that music can change how folks feel and move. His journey precedes this with memories of singing as early as the age of two. Later analyzing legendary artists, and understanding the power and privilege of what he has been given.
Born in the West Midlands but raised in East London, Morris grew up with reggae, gospel, and soul at home. His horizons were opened when his parents took him to his first Nigerian church at eight years old. The music, movement, and cultural expression that filled this environment had a lasting impact on him and solidified his connection with rhythm and performing.
His songwriting began when he was just a teenager. By the age of fourteen, he wrote and produced his first track and started performing at school assembly programs and gatherings. Morris spent plenty of time after school and during lunch hours in music rooms, writing, producing, and finding enough courage to share his singing with others.
Today, Morris pursues his career independently, which has been filled with newfound responsibility and liberty to create. He embarks on this new phase with ease and understanding, learning how to handle every aspect of his life. Being independent, allows Morris to create his own identity and songs that reflect his experiences with no compromises.
His inspirations run deep; they emanate from a lineup of musical giants who helped define performances on a universal level. Michael Jackson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, Usher, SisQo, Bruno Mars, Ne-Yo, and The Weeknd were among those artists that Morris drew inspiration from while studying their voices, body language, and expressions that he now translates into his works.
“WAIT ME!” emerged with such originality because of Morris’s songwriting style. Morris composes melodies that resonate with him effortlessly and stick with him for a while. It’s only when “the musical foundation comes together” that his words begin to fall into place, creating a compelling narrative or an inspirational experience.
The EP contains six songs that document the highs and lows of his experience. It encompasses sadness, uncertainty, eagerness, and awakening. Morris looks to empower those who listen to feel understood and inspired while finding themselves among his experiences. His project seeks to incite evaluation and celebration among those who experience life’s plethysmography.
“WAIT ME!” comes at just the right time for Lamar Morris. More importantly, he looks forward to taking these songs around the world and performing the stories behind them for fans. It’s his goal to get audiences singing, dancing, crying, yelling, and feeling alive once more.
