President Donald Trump has endorsed Darline Graham for a six-year term in the Senate. Officials swore in Darline this week after the authorities appointed her to succeed her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, who died suddenly. Graham, known for achieving many bipartisan breakthroughs in the Senate, passed away last weekend.

The Truth Social Announcement

Trump announced Truth Social on Friday. He revealed that he had met with Darline at the White House and encouraged her to run for the full term in South Carolina.

I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate in the Special Republican Primary,” Trump wrote.

Trump is positioning Darline’s candidacy as a tribute to her late brother’s legacy. He has asserted that “there would be nobody better” to honor the legacy of the fallen senator, Lindsey.

Trump exhorted that Darline comes from an incredible family and “has been a winner all her life” and offered to throw his full weight behind her candidacy. He concluded with an emphatic “Run, Darline, run!”

Background and Status

Before this week’s appointment, Darline led a quiet life.

Up until Governor Henry McMaster appointed her, she served as a commissioner at the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.

Darline may come off as a political newbie, but she was constantly present alongside her brother throughout his political career.

She routinely attended campaign rallies and made media appearances with him.

Even her interim position is a historical milestone as she is the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate.

The Passing of Senator Graham

Lindsey Graham had served South Carolina in the Senate since 2003. He died last Saturday aged 71. Medical reports indicate aortic dissection to be the cause of death.

Send-off arrangements for the late senator have been finalized. A memorial service will be held in Washington, DC, on July 28, 2026.  Other memorial services will be held in South Carolina on the same weekend.

For more than two decades, the late senator stood out as a formidable foreign policy expert and an influential negotiator across party lines.

In 2016, he sharply opposed Trump and even made his own bid for the Republican presidential nomination. After this failed attempt, he transitioned into one of the President’s top allies.

Midterm Disruptions

Senator Graham had clinched his party’s nomination for a fifth term in the Senate before his passing.

South Carolina officials are planning to organize a special primary ahead of the November midterms. The new primary is scheduled for August 11, 2026.

Trump’s loud endorsement of Darline Graham may alter the political dynamics of the context.  The open seat had drawn major interest from established Republicans across the state who were planning their own bids.

In a Nutshell

As both a newcomer and a Trump favourite in the state, other than the fact that she carries the Graham family name, now makes her nomination almost guaranteed should she be interested in serving a full term. If Darline secures the Republican nomination in the August primary, she will proceed to the general election ballot to face the Democratic Senate nominee, Annie Andrews.
