Michelle Ann Owens moved to Las Vegas without the expectation of staying long. The shift began as a temporary change after years in Los Angeles as a way to shake up her surroundings. She did not anticipate, however, the impact Vegas would have on her songwriting and production choices. Her new album, “Chapter Vegas,” captures the intensity, energy, and transformation that unfolded during that short period in Owens’ career.
Las Vegas carries a distinct pace, unpredictable, and emotionally intense. Owens felt that weight immediately. The city’s volatility of daily life, and even the surrounding mountains and scenery, left their mark. That energy affected her creatively, transforming pressure into momentum rather than chaos.
A defining feature of the album comes from Owens’s use of live horn sections. Vegas is known for cover shows and rotating acts built around classic material, and she leaned into that aspect deliberately. Several older soul and funk tracks like “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “Give It To Me Baby” received fresh arrangements that honored the original era of the genres while reflecting her own interpretation.
The move also influenced her original songwriting. Ideas poured out with sharper emotion and faster completion than ever before. The tension and rapid changes she experienced in Vegas infused the songs with a charged energy. Themes of bold confidence, messy relationships, and raw desire run through the album, reflecting the intensity of her time there.
Collaboration played a key role in shaping the record. Producer Michael “Fish” Herring worked on two crucial tracks, transforming early demos into fully realized songs that connected seamlessly with the covers and original material. His experience in funk, soul, and pop complemented Owens’ retro-modern approach, enhancing the album without diluting her vision.
Owens did not aim to deliver a specific message or force a narrative on listeners. The music exists for the groove, the energy of live instrumentation, and the milestone of completing a full-length project independently.
“Chapter Vegas” stands as a testament to Owens’ work behind the scenes. A temporary move triggered an evolution in sound, capturing a moment that challenged Michelle Ann Owens, expanded her perspective, and sharpened her artistic voice. At the heart of the album are two new songs, fully produced by Owens, “Funkin’ Beautiful” and “SIDEPIECE.” Be sure to check out “Chapter Vegas” out now on all platforms.
