The potential for telling authentic, important, and relevant stories is one thing that drew George Ellis, founder of Coronado Beach Productions, to the independent film industry. He knew big studios were focused on telling big, blockbuster stories. Independent studios, however, have the leeway needed to cover other ground.

“The more scripts people send to me, the more obvious it becomes that most have an autobiographical element to them,” Ellis explains. “Whereas big studio stories are typically built around a common formula, indie stories are built around a personal experience. They’re stories from the heart.”

Creating a space where personal stories can be told is central to the mission of Coronado Beach Productions. Ellis launched the company in 2023 with a focus on filmmaking. Today, however, it helps storytellers tap into a wide range of media channels to get their message in front of audiences.

“We’re here to help creative people turn their ideas into reality,” Ellis says. “Whether it’s book publishing, film production, or podcasting, we have the skills and experience to bring it to life.”

Discovering his untapped talent led Ellis to launch Coronado Beach Productions

Ellis became a filmmaker later in life after a successful career as a urologic surgeon. He explains that he was on a hiking trip with his son in Colorado when he thought he should explore what it would be like to make an independent film.

“I had appeared as an extra in a few movies when I was in medical school,” Ellis shares. “It was a great experience that stuck with me for decades. So, when I returned to Florida after the hiking trip, I attended an independent film festival and was impressed with what I saw. I really felt like I could contribute to what was going on in the indie film space, so I dove in.”

Ellis found a cinematographer through Craigslist and hired her for a few projects. She became a mentor to him, helping him turn ideas into finished projects and eventually encouraging him to enter those projects in film festivals.

“I took her advice and was so glad I did,” Ellis shares. “My first two films won awards, including the ‘Debut Filmmaker Award’ at the Dubai International Cine Carnival. I soon launched Coronado Beach Productions and began producing as well as directing films.”

How Coronado Beach Productions helps others to tell their stories

Becoming a film producer was a natural progression for Ellis. He’s the type of guy who likes to help others. For example, even as a retired doctor, he continues to provide medical care through a free clinic that helps homeless people and others without insurance.

“As a producer, I can help other filmmakers get their projects off the ground and headed in the right direction,” Ellis says. “They bring the idea, and we provide the expertise needed to capture their message and get it in front of the right audience.”

From its base in Florida, Coronado Beach Productions has helped storytellers across the country bring their visions to life. Ellis has even helped to produce a film shoot that took place on Mount Lee behind Los Angeles’s famous Hollywood sign.

To date, Ellis has produced over a dozen projects, with several more in the pipeline. As his reputation has grown, so has the demand for his services. Lately, he’s had to become selective with the projects he takes on, preferring those in which he can partner with storytellers to provide both creative input and financial backing.

Beyond film, Coronado Beach Productions also amplifies unique voices by helping with book publishing. The company’s efforts include publishing a book co-written by Ellis and his son, Adam, who is a chef and meat cutter. “A Surgical Approach to Meat Cutting” presents historical perspectives on butchery and surgery as well as surprising parallels between the two.

As Ellis and his team have branched out into publishing and podcast production, the expertise they have to offer clients has grown. Those needing guidance and support will find that Coronado Beach Productions offers a flexible process tailored to meet the unique needs of each client, along with the expertise to work through challenges and achieve success.

“Today’s technology makes it possible for anyone to make a film or produce a podcast,” Ellis says. “Simply creating it can be done on most people’s phones, but creating it being so easy means there is a lot more content to compete with. If you don’t know how to connect with an audience, your project is going to be buried in a sea of media.”

Ellis’s experiences have given him the insights needed to cut through the noise. By sharing those insights with his clients, he helps them to find success and satisfaction as independent storytellers.
