A debut single may be a great opportunity to present your unique sound to the world. But for Jesse Davidson, his debut country single is also a chance to introduce his style of thinking. Years before entering a recording studio, Davidson was an English teacher, spending time with young people trying to interpret the meanings behind stories of famous novels, poems, and literary classics. And now, years of immersion in storytelling found their expression in Jesse Davidson’s debut single, “Hemingway.”

Instead of writing another love song, Davidson came up with an interesting concept. The title “Hemingway” alludes to the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, but not in the way one may think at first. The name becomes a metaphor for someone who struggles to express their emotions until they finally find the right words.

“The title of ‘Hemingway’ felt right for this song,” Davidson explains. “Hemingway is used as a metaphor for a person who doesn’t know how to express how they feel toward someone. Once they finally find the right words, call them Hemingway.”

The concept and style of the interpretation are reminiscent of years spent with students explaining symbolism and storytelling.

Finding Meaning Without Saying Everything

Another aspect of Hemingway that Jesse Davidson values is his ability to convey strong emotions using very simple language. This principle played an important role while writing the song “Hemingway,” because it inspired the artist to use moderation rather than exaggeration.

“You know, I’ve always had respect for the notion that sometimes you don’t have to complicate everything,” he said. “This song should be authentic and allow the listener to add some pieces to it from their life.”

Such techniques allow listeners to connect with the song by means of their own memories. It was not Davidson’s intention to describe everything that happened during these days in too much detail; he wanted to leave the listener space for thinking and experiencing their individual emotions.

The song, despite being filled with imagination, stays authentic. Davidson thinks that some of the best songs of the country genre consist of both truthful personal experience and universality.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom

His career as a teacher has shaped his music in ways that go beyond just literary influences. Teaching every day in front of a class made him realize the significance of sincerity, and this is what he takes into consideration while performing as a recording artist. “I have learned how to be myself through teaching,” Davidson mentions. “Students can always sense when you are pretending, and the audience will catch on. I have never tried to be someone else. In the end, I am an English teacher who really enjoys music.”

This attitude guides him throughout his whole creative process. Although his experience as a literature teacher introduced him to symbolism, imagery, character development, and themes in the literary works, Davidson finds himself inspired by many other things apart from those literary terms, using them as yet another method of enhancing his songs’ narratives.

Switching from teaching to creating music brought personal challenges to Jesse Davidson. The process of creating original music demanded stepping out of one’s comfort zone, something which the performer admits. “I always say that sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone in order to grow. I definitely had to follow my own advice in this song’s process.”

Turning the Page

With “Hemingway,” Davidson hopes listeners find more than just a catchy tune. He wants them to relate to parts of themselves through the song’s lyrics – be it memories of an ex-lover, a fond recollection of something important, or a piece of their life that helped form the person they’ve become.

What he really hopes is that through “Hemingway,” he can inspire listeners to crave for another story to unfold.

“I want people to understand I love telling stories,” Davidson explains. “I want people to listen to ‘Hemingway’ and wonder what will happen next.”

For a songwriter used to crafting lyrics for artists to help tell their story, “Hemingway” is a fitting starting point. This song serves as both an introduction for Jesse Davidson as a country singer and storyteller.
