June Robin’s “WALL” hits at an inflection point in her life: the French polyphonic singer and former backing vocalist (she sang on Jérémy Kapone’s Libellula and released earlier work as ZØ) is now stepping to the front in San Francisco. It was released in August 2026 as the first single of a project running up to a full-length 2027 debut album. In Robin’s characteristically eclectic fashion, the single it exhorts all of us to live our lives to the utmost, without conformity or fear.

Sound and Production
The track bops along at a BPM of 92; a rhythmic, danceable blend of jazzy R&B and groovy melodic instrumentals. The feeling it inspires is definitely one of freedom and self-expressiveness, which makes perfect sense considering the artist’s continental roots and globe-spanning ways. The production is somewhat spartan, which might feel like a missed opportunity, but that didn’t seem to be the star of the show here.
This light touch from the producer is designed to allow June Robin to shine through and reach the listener directly, and I felt just that listening to her here. This artist seems to have the ability to tap into the vibes of musical eras long-since passed, slapping on a patina of modern feeling and passing it on to us in entirely new ways. It’s a marvel here. The track feels like a throwback to 90’s RnB and soul, with toned-down instruments creating the perfect cocoon for powerful vocals and near spoken-word stretches of cruising.

Performance and Vocals
June Robin has a voice that could hold its own against any chart-topper, and it’s a pleasure to note that talents like hers are still to be found in the wild. She doesn’t strain for the highest highs or the lowest lows. Her laid-back, come-dance-with-me sultriness is exactly what the track calls for. She keeps pace with the jazzy, smooth vibes, but we never get the sense she’s operating at full capacity. Perhaps that wasn’t the point, but we’d have loved to hear her stretch out on a track with this level of significance at this point of her journey as an artist.
Lyrics and Songwriting
The real star of the show, however, lies in June’s writing. While we can appreciate the top-tier production and her world-class vocals, it’s the message, or messages, carried in the song that really make this track stand out. June believes that people should allow themselves the permission to be contradictory in themselves, and we see mention of this when she simultaneously ‘moves quietly’, while being ‘allergic to silence.’
The most powerful passages of the track, however, are those where she challenges us to live bravely when she declares ‘They try to script you like a cautionary tale, stay small, stay safe.’ She gives us an example of resilience as well, stating ‘I don’t break, I reroute.’
Assessment
With a runtime of 3:26, the track took the time it needed to deliver its message in full, it seems. Robin has delivered something that’s sorely missing from the charts today: an unashamedly self-expressive yet entirely coherent piece of musicality. While one might struggle to confine it into a tight box genre-wise, it shouts in its defiance and willingness to take a few risks. I, of course, might be partial to it owing to its throwback tones, but the themes of defiance and fearlessness are undeniably timeless.
Final Verdict
This track is a clear indication of what June Robin can do when she puts her considerable gifts to work. Could it have been a bit more trendy? Sure. Could it have done with a bit more production? Maybe. To me, though, it comes together well enough to have me recognize June Robin as a talent to keep a careful eye on, especially as we await her upcoming album.
