American President Donald J. Trump has endorsed Georgia Republican nominee for residency in the governor’s mansion Rick Jackson after his erstwhile preference, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, failed the state’s GOP primary elections.
The endorsement came in on Thursday, with Trump also urging his Republican Party to unite behind Jackson in one of the country’s most closely followed governor races.
President Trump had initially backed Jones, whose defeat marked one of the rare losses for a Trump-backed candidate in this election cycle. In the aftermath of the primary, though, Trump praised Jackson’s campaign, stating that he had run a “great TRUMP Campaign” while describing Jones as a man with a ‘fantastic future’.

In his recent post on Truth Social, Trump called Jackson a very successful businessman and entrepreneur, encouraging the Republican establishment to rally behind him as the country heads into the November election.
The candidate will face Democrat contender Keisha Lance Bottoms in the race to replace Republican Governor Brian Kemp, now term-limited. Bottoms’ campaign has so far not responded to our requests for comment.
Jackson acknowledged the endorsement with a post on X, stating, “Just as you’ve brought business solutions to Washington, I’ll bring business solutions to Georgia.”
Noted political analyst Robert Y. Shapiro, a professor at Columbia University, told reporters that Trump’s endorsement reflects a broader effort to strengthen Republican unity in a crucial battleground state.
He opined that Trump’s intent was to support his party’s candidates to the full and bolster party loyalty while emphasizing the importance of party loyalty and re-energizing the republican base, especially within battle state races.
Governor’s race remains highly competitive.
A survey conducted by the AARP found Bottoms leading Jackson by 48 to 46 percent among likely voters, though this result falls within the poll’s margin of error, statistically tying the race. With voters of 50 years and older, Jackson maintained a 55 to 42 percent lead. The survey questioned more than 1,000 potential voters in July. The survey’s stated margin of error is three percentage points.
The state is one of the most competitive states in the country, though President Trump carried it in the 2024 presidential elections with 50.7 percent of the vote, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump, true to form, has continued to wield his significant influence over the proceedings of the Republican primaries. Among his recent victories was Jay Feely’s triumph in his heated race for nomination in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. Also significant was Representative Andy Biggs’ Republican governor’s nomination.
The loss in Georgia signifies one of the few setbacks Trump-endorsed candidates have endured in 2026.
The President’s backing of Jackson signifies an effort to quickly and effectively unite the Republican base ahead of November’s contest as both parties prepare for what’s widely expected to be one of the country’s most closely spectated gubernatorial contests.
